PETITION CALLING FOR PROBE INTO THE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENTS WHICH CHARACTERISED THE ELECTION OF THE SPEAKER OF THE 8 TH PARLIAMENT OF THE REPUBLIC ON 7 TH JANUARY, 2021.

Posted on  January 13, 2021  by  Pnafrica

On behalf of Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica), please accept our congratulations on your election to the high office of the Speaker of the 8 th Parliament of
the Fourth Republic of Ghana. PNAfrica counts very much on your extensive Parliamentary experience and expertise to steer the affairs of the august House towards the effective and efficient discharge of the constitutional mandate of Parliament.

Right Honourable Speaker, we observed with regrets the unfortunate disturbances which characterised your election to the high office in the forenoon of 7 th January, 2021.
We recall that, on the said date, the conduct of the election witnessed wanton disregard for the rules of the House and best international Parliamentary practices, and general violent behaviour on the part of some Members-Elect. This unfortunate incident has gravely impaired the dignity of the House and adversely impacted on public confidence
in the august House. It is our fervent belief that full probe must be conducted as soon as possible as a first step in remedying the situation. We further believe that the probing
mechanism should produce recommendations that will be implemented to avert recurrence of the unfortunate incident.

In the above regard, we humbly call for probe into the disturbances which marred the said election and the culprits punished and recommendations made to avert recurrence
of the unfortunate incident. This may include, but not limited to the following;
1. The general violent behaviour of some Members-Elect and their actions that affected the election process,
2. The presence of Strangers in the hallowed Chamber of Parliament,
3. The role of official(s) of the Parliamentary Service mandated to ensure order in the House during the period.

This, we strongly believe, will salvage the impairing image of Parliament and restore public confidence in the House. We also believe the recommendations will help improve
and strengthen the institution of Parliament and its Departments in the discharge of its duties.

Right Honourable Speaker, we wish you well in your new role. As a parliamentary monitoring civil society organisation registered under the laws of Ghana, we pledge our
unalloyed support to this course towards building our nascent Parliamentary democracy.

Please accept, Right Honourable Speaker, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Yours sincerely,

SIGNED
